Overlanding has become a popular way for adventurers to explore the outdoors in their own or hired vehicles. It offers a unique experience of being self-sufficient and self-contained in your travels, giving you the freedom to roam wherever your heart desires.
However, a successful overland trip requires proper planning and execution.
Here are some tips to help you plan and execute a successful overlanding trip.
Choose the Right Vehicle
Choosing the right vehicle for your overlanding trip is crucial. You’ll need a vehicle that is reliable (cannot stress this point enough), can handle rough terrain, and has enough storage space to carry all your gear and supplies (and more). A 4×4 vehicle with good ground clearance and sturdy suspension is essential for off-road travel. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with all-terrain tires, bash plates, and has recovery points that you know to help you tackle any obstacles (water, rocks, etc) you may encounter.
Plan Your Route
Planning your route in advance will help you make the most of your time on the road. You can research potential routes and destinations online, in guidebooks, and by talking to other overlanders. Make sure to consider factors such as road conditions, weather patterns, and potential hazards. Keep in mind that overland travel can take longer than regular road trips, so make sure to factor in plenty of time for exploration and detours. And as general rule of thumb, especially in AFRICA, you do not want to be driving through the night, therefore, ensure you have factored this into your plans.
Pack the Essentials
When packing for an overland trip, focus on the essentials. Bring enough food, water, and fuel to last for the duration of your trip, as well as a first aid kit, navigation tools (such as a Garmin with Tracks4Africa), and communication devices such as a two-way radio. Bring appropriate clothing and gear for the climate and terrain you’ll be traveling in, and don’t forget about items like a high-quality canvas tent (in Africa you want the security of ripstop canvas) and sleeping bag for camping. Take note of the temperatures in the areas you’re travelling.
Be Prepared for Emergencies
When traveling off the beaten path, it’s important to be prepared for emergencies. Make sure you have a plan in place for contacting emergency services in case of a serious injury or vehicle breakdown. Bring a spare tire, perhaps even two, and necessary tools for repairing your vehicle, as well as extra food and water in case of unexpected delays. We advise that you travel in two vehicles when you can.
Respect the Environment
When traveling in remote wilderness areas, it’s important to respect the environment and leave no trace of your presence. Follow leave-no-trace principles such as packing out all your trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife and natural resources.
